How to buy a 5-axis machining center: a buyer's checklist
To buy a 5-axis machining center you will not regret, start from your parts, not from the brochure. Define the largest workpiece and its weight, decide whether the work needs simultaneous 5-axis or 3+2 positioning, then match the spindle, control, tool magazine and automation to that work. Builders, prices and availability come last. This checklist follows the order our engineers use when a customer asks Xingdaotai Limited to source a machine.
What will the machine actually cut?
Write down three or four typical parts with material, envelope, weight, batch size and the tightest tolerance. A shop making aluminum housings in batches of several hundred needs a different machine from a mold shop finishing hardened steel cavities one at a time. The part list decides the table size, the spindle and whether a pallet changer will pay for itself.
Leave room for fixtures. A 400 mm part in a vise or on a tombstone needs more than 400 mm of travel, and on a tilting table the diameter the part sweeps while it swings is what limits you, not the table surface.
Which 5-axis kinematics fits your parts?
The fifth axis sits either in the workpiece, on a tilting rotary table, or in the tool, on a swivel head. Some builders offer both. HELLER lists 5-axis models with the fifth axis in the workpiece and others with it in the tool for 5-sided and simultaneous work. Hermle builds its 5-axis machining centers in portal design, from the compact C 12 up to the C 650.
| Layout | Fifth axis in | Typical work | Check before buying |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tilting rotary (trunnion) table | Workpiece | Small and mid-size parts, housings, impellers, medical parts | Table load at full tilt, swept diameter |
| Swivel head with rotary table | Tool | Heavy or long parts that should stay flat | Head stiffness, collision zones around the head |
| Horizontal machine with pallets | Workpiece or tool, by model | Series production, good chip fall | Floor space, pallet system scope |
Do you need simultaneous 5-axis or 3+2?
In 3+2 work the rotary axes position the part and lock, then the machine cuts in three axes. That covers most 5-sided prismatic parts. Simultaneous 5-axis is needed for blades, impellers, ports and free-form surfaces where the tool must tilt while it cuts.
The difference shows up in the configuration list. Among the new HELLER HF 3500 machines available to order from European warehouses, one is configured as AB-3+2 and two as AB-5X, all with HSK 63 spindles. CAM licenses split the same way: Autodesk keeps full 5-axis with automatic collision avoidance in PowerMill Ultimate, while the Standard edition covers 3+2. Budget for the machine and the software together.
Spindle, taper and tool magazine
Choose the spindle for the material. High speed with moderate torque suits aluminum and finishing. Steel, titanium and heavy roughing want torque at low speed. The taper follows: HSK 63 is common on mid-size machines, HSK 100 on larger ones that take heavy cuts. The stock list shows the spread, with HSK 63 on the H 4000 and HF 3500 units and HSK 100 on the H 6000 and F 6000.
Count the tools each part family uses, then add sister tools and empty pockets for new jobs. The HELLER machines in our list carry magazines from K 54 to K 160. A magazine that is full on day one becomes the bottleneck within a year.
Control, CAM and post-processor
Siemens SINUMERIK, Heidenhain TNC and Fanuc controls all run 5-axis programs, but your operators may know only one of them. Ask for tool center point management and kinematic calibration cycles; they let the control compensate when the tool tilts and when the rotary axis centers drift with temperature.
Then check that your CAM system has a tested post-processor for this exact machine, control and kinematics. A generic post can run 3+2 jobs and still produce wrong motion in simultaneous work. If no reliable post exists, budget for one. We write and adapt post-processors for your machine and control as part of our software work.
Automation, site and acceptance
A pallet changer or robot cell changes the economics more than extra spindle speed. If you plan unmanned shifts, specify automation with the machine. Hermle designs its pallet changers, handling and robot systems in-house; ask any builder which automation fits the model you are quoting.
Check the foundation, power supply, compressed air and the lifting gear needed for installation. Agree the acceptance test in writing: which test piece is cut (ISO 10791-7 defines test pieces for machining centers), whether the rotary axes get a ballbar check, and which tolerances the machine must hold at your site.

- Control model, software version and options
- Acceptance test protocol
- Export classification of the machine
New to order, from stock or used?
A machine built to order gets your exact configuration. A machine already built ships sooner, with its options fixed. In October 2026 our list of new machining centers available to order showed HELLER H, HF and F 6000 models with Siemens 840D sl or SINUMERIK ONE controls. Used and ex-demo machines are a third route, and spindle hours are the first figure to check there.
Compare two or three builders on the same part list. DMG MORI covers 5-axis milling with series such as DMU and DMX, and the full set of builders we source from is under CNC machining centers in the catalog. One last point: some high-accuracy 5-axis machines are dual-use items under export control rules, so the seller may ask you for an end-user statement before shipping.
